Question: i need an activity or game teaching the concepts of volume/capacity to grade 1-2 children?
hi guys, my assignment requires me to devise a maths game/activity for the children grades 1 to 2. the game doesn't need to have formal measurements, just something so the children can grasp initial concepts of volume. so no need to introduce formal measurements. eg, metric units or whatnot. i've been racking my brain for ideas and i've gotten a few suggestions like containers and sand, but i would like some other ideas. thanks
Answer: My suggestion is similar to yours, but to engage that age group (6-7ish?) I would use edible materials. For example, allowing the children to pour juice into paper cups while explaining the concept of volume. If using liquid is too messy then maybe you can substitute it with cereal. I remember being that age and this helped me understand: a bowl was filled w/ cereal, and I was asked if the bowl was full. I answered yes, then my teacher proceeded to top the bowl off with milk and said if the bowl is full then why was there room for milk? At the time it blew my 6 year old mind! Hope that helps!
