During the 100 meter dash in 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea, Florence Griffin Joyner was timed at 0.91 seconds for 10 meters.
At this Speed, could she pass a car traveling 15 miles per hour in a school zone?
HINT: You must use conversion between units of measure to answer this question.
Try to SHOW all STEPS
Answer: 10 meters in .91 sec = 10 / .91 meters/second = 10.989 m/sec
1 m = 3.28 feet, so that's
10.989 * 3.28 = 36 ft/sec
1 mi = 5280 ft, 1 hr = 60 min, 1 min = 60 sec, so doing all the conversions at once:
15 mi/hr = 15 * 5280 feet / 3600 seconds ( 1 hr = 60 min * 60 sec) = 22 ft/sec
So, YES, she IS going faster than the car.
