Question: Looking for fun, independent remedial activities. Have any ideas?

In a few weeks, I will receive a classroom allotment. I'm looking for one-person games that would be appropriate for those working below grade level. All I can think of is those Math Blaster games. I didn't know if the Leap Frog stuff was worth the funds.

I'm hoping to find a few that would motivate the students to finish their work more quickly.

I'm a K-5 special education teacher...so above grade level is not really needed.

Answer: "Center" activities of various sorts (to do in a particular center location or take to their seat) may be good, e.g.:

-making words with magnetic letters, or poems with magnetic words
-making words from one long word (e.g. how many words can you make with the letters of the word "waterfall")
-stamping words
-alphabetizing center
-center where students put strips in the correct order to make a poem
-letter writing center (write real letters to real people)
-listening center (listen to books on tape)
-mad libs
-wipe-off cursive or manuscript writing practice (laminate practice pages; they use a dry erase marker)
-free games online (e.g. at http://www.funbrain.com)
-Marcy Cook tiles for math

If you want software, Scholastic also has other good software:
