1. The football team lost 5 yards on its first play and 6 yards on its second play. How many total yards did the team lose in two plays?
2. The temperature was -5° F at midnight. It rose 20° by morning. What was the morning temperature?
3. The football team lost 2 yards on each of its 3 plays. What was the team's total loss for the 3 plays?
4. Adam had $250 in his savings account. He took out $150 to buy a game system. How much money was left in his savings account?
5. This morning, the temperature was 10° F. By noon, it fell 15 degrees. What was the temperature at noon?
Answer: 1) Because they lost yards in both plays, you're looking to see how many yards they lost within those two plays.
-5 + -6 = -5 - 6
= -11 yards
2) Since it was at -5 and it rose by 20:
-5 + 20 = 15 F
3) They lost 2 yards during each play, so:
-2 yards (3 plays) = -6 yards
4) 250 - 150 = $100
5) Since it fell by 15 degrees:
10 - 15 = -5 F
